SO Green Golf is headed up by Steve Okula, a career agronomist who believes in the health of the surface while respecting environmental impact for optimal playing conditions.

Steve began his career in golf course agronomy graduating the University of Maryland turfgrass curriculum and with an internship at Pinehurst. This was followed by years at top facilities on the east coast of the USA, hosting PGA and LPGA Tour events as superintendent at Bardmoor Country Club on Florida’s Gulf coast. His initiation into golf course construction came next at Sapphire Lakes Country Club in the mountains of western North Carolina.

In 1990, the appeal of international travel drew him abroad where he has worked with Gary Player Design on construction projects in South Africa, Spain and the Philippines, David Jones Golf Design on projects in Turkey and east Africa, with IAGTO on an audit of seven golf courses in Tunisia.

From May 2001 until November 2017 Steve was superintendent at Golf de Joyenval, a private 36-hole Robert Trent Jones Senior design near Paris, France, hosting European Tour events. The Peugeot Golf Guide and Rolex World’s Top 1000 courses both acknowledged the improvements in course conditions after his arrival.

Having studied Golf Course Turf Management at University of Maryland, Steve also completed a Professional diploma in Golf Course Architecture at Edinburgh College of Art Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh, Scotland as well as ongoing and continuous turfgrass science studies with the Penn State University Turfgrass programme.

Steve is a certified Golf Course Superintendent with the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, a Master Greenkeeper with the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association and a member of AGREF, the Association Française des personnels d’Entretien des Terrains de Golf. Steve believes in adhering to and respecting the ethics of these affiliations.

A dual American and French citizen, Steve is fluent in English, French and Spanish. He lives outside of Paris with his family.
